Building Structure, Project 2: Analysis of a Bungalow

This project is an integrated component where it involves structural theory, force calculation and basic structural proposal. This project will be reflecting our knowledge and understanding of building structure.

We are to design a two-storey bungalow with usable spaces such as living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and others. Beams and columns also include within this design, suitable number of beams and column, position, type or size are all taking in concern. Then by calculating the beams and column load, forces and reaction forces to ensure whether the structure is stable or not.







After having done this project, I learnt about the importance of having a good structural design to in compliance with the design. Its very critical because it determine whether the building is buildability of a building, cause when comes to an end, if a building is not buildeable and its not a good design.  

Building Structure, Project 1: Roof Truss

Truss is a structure built up of three or more members which are normally considered being pinned and hinged at the joints. Load applied to the truss is transmitted to joint so that each individual members are in either pure tension or compression.

In a group, we design our own roof design and trusses based on a building. Dome roof for our roof in compliance to the circular form of the building. A space frame for the perimeter support truss with two type, one is sitting of load bearing wall and another is supported by pillar. Trusses and bracing for better roof structure support.






Building Services, Project 2: Building Services in Public Building

In associate with Studio 4 assignment, first we have to analyze and then design and propose services systems consist of mechanical ventilation system, air-conditioning system, fire protection system and mechanical transportation system. Because the building selected is an multi-storey elderly centre, the system using will have a direct impact to the occupants.






By having done all the research and understanding which system are the best for the occupants, its very satisfying to say that I did learnt a lot from this assignment. When comes to elderly centre, first concern will be the comfortable level and suitability of each and every system, anything that causing discomfort or distress will be removed, while its still being very suitable and convenient for the elderly such as elevator or escape route. Combining this two factor are the most difficult thing but its worth for the occupants.

Building Services, Project 1: Case study and Documentation of Building Services Systems



This assignment works on the basic application of building services, including electrical supply system, cold water and hot water supply system, sewage and sanitary system and storm water and drainage system, which are essential to make a building function. Based on our understanding and knowledge of building science and its system, we are to propose and design a full functional services system and apply them appropriately for this specific building.

Asian Architecture, Project 1B: Case Study Paper

Identify the key and significant issues that are facing by S11 house, and identify a specific topic for this case study, which is "The use of climatic responsive materials in S11 House as an approach to respond to local climate patterns is PJS11, Petaling Jaya in order to provide user comfort and achieve sustainability. The report will be based on this issue.





This case study report and the contextual study have grant me the knowledge and information to design expensively to solve the issues in Asia. Learnt how to address the key issues that affect the environment, building and most importantly the occupants, they are all interrelated to each other, every elements and designs are for the benefits and comfort level for the occupants.

This assignment is about extensive research within the framework of contextual architecture in Asia and focuses on the building selected, which is S11 house, located in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. This building extensively shows the critical issues in Malaysia and how to solve it by using passive design and usage of material to address all those issue, mainly climatic issues.

Studio 4, Project 1: A Personal Space

Objective of this assignment is to engage with user experiences which is intended for a specific elderly user based on his/her personal needs. This is to integrate with environmental sustainability for the imperative and inter-related social needs.

Catherine, from Little Sister of the Poor, she has a movement difficulty but its not serious, with hearing lost. The design elements are to comply with her difficulty then providing a suitable and comfortable space for her. The function of this space is for her to enjoy her very own personal time with minimum distracting, but it might also be open to others or public as well for better communicating and social activities, opening are suitable for this aspect while the structure envelope are covered by simply fiber-membrane. The structural components will be made out of timber for matching with the greenery environment, and it consists of horizontal slim pillar and elevated strut which elevated the whole structure up while supporting it. These material are most suitable for outdoor usage for better ventilation and light penetration to achieve a zero energy usage. Small cabinets, seating and table are the only things she needed in here, everything is design based on her human ergonomic. Enjoyment was achieved.



Studio 4, Project 2: Centre for the Elderly

Centre for the elderly, site located at Taman Kanagapuram. The main function of this is to provide activities spaces that are insufficient in the nearby elderly centre but without accommodation. Design dealing with the surrounding environment and how the elderly communicate within the building itself is concerned. Social activities, communication, spaces, function, comfort level and suitability for elderly is the aspect to be concern during designing this elderly centre. 


Site Analysis



Concept and Intention

In Taman Kanagapuram, the value of its contribution to society as in commercial or historical are slowly depleting. Originally Taman Kanagapuram was a dwelling area, it establish during 1950’s and growing since then due to the situation of over population in Kuala Lumpur. New developments start taking place as us skyscrapers and apartments, residents start move out to new home and areas, related to the rapidly growing of high rise apartment buildings, there are still construction going on nearby the chosen site, and slowly Taman Kanagapuram become less lively over the years. Based on this situation, empty houses are being transform into commercial usages, but this doesn’t shop the urban development that engulfed the site gradually. To prevent this situation from happening, is to bring back the value of this area, giving a new purpose to it which is greater than those developments which is creating a place where elderly able to showcasing their skills and display it to the society hence propagate the area and elderly centre, which on another hand help preserve the site and being new hopes to the elderly.

Studio 3: Project 3, Visitor Interpretive Centre (VIC)

The concept is redefining the grid, creating a sense of contradiction between what is old and new, making it easier to acknowledge or differentiate past and present. The building arrangement of the existing heritage buildings are in a horizontal and vertical manner, by tilting the angle of the walls to create an in depth effect of the facade. Other elements taken from the site will be remain such as the vertical plain facade, narrow arrangements and the elongated space volume.



The spacial planning is clearly defined by the separated building and floor. for a clearly direction where the user go, without a aim or destination, then just walk randomly, until you found your destiny. The entire area is free to roam, extra open space will be converted into greenery and recreation area.



Interior, with some narrow and wide interior space, giving different experiences in different places. User can even get to choose their path, no restriction is most suitable for present generation, bravely exploring, different experiences and also different view and perspective.

Everything planned here might be confusing, but confusing is what brought out the curiosity from the inside, without this strong feeling, everything you see will just be like a pass by cloud. Maintaining this curiosity feel, explore Malacca, and will be a whole new experience, and this is just the starting of it.





Studio 3: Project 2, Genius Loci, Site analysis and concept development


Bukit Cina, Malacca, a significant mountain in Malacca, it is a grave field for the Chinese. Sam Po Well Community, next to Bukit Cina, has a strong bond with it and Malacca center town.

Using the surrounding heritage buildings' elements and use it on concept development. Bring in something new while maintaining the old that's what enhance the area. The new elements will greatly affect the surround buildings. It is all about redefining the grid, By the different angle of the facade walls and arrangement of the building. 


Studio 3: Journey of the 5 Senses, Project 1a

Project 1a: Precedent studies

Temple of Heaven, Beijing.


Temple of Heaven, Shanghai, a significant building and landmark of China. The function of this building is for worshiping , with a concentric spacial arrangement which representing the universe and the sky, a simple of infinity as well as connection with the heaven, that's the main poetic of this building and also relate to its typologies. the interior is supported by many timber columns which representing the months, seasons, and the years, which make the interior slightly compact but the height helps contrasting the interior create a harmony interior environment.

The spatial poetic of this building is more towards an ancient believe, the elements are more toward to an amplified space and building, make it as significant as possible but less self-sustain.


Denmark Pavilion, Shanghai Expo.

Denmark Pavilion, Shanghai. A building design by Denmark architecture located in Shanghai, China, as a expo of Denmark. A linear spatial arrangement although the exterior look curve. The structure is formed by bending a straight line and a loop is form, but circulation still remain linear. This building often confusing and it act as a poetic spatial. The who building design is more toward sustainable design which is so different from the Temple of Heaven. The wall is with pores which is permeable, allowing vision and ventilation, privacy is maintained. This building play with the difference in level as it poetic elements, since it is a expo, vision field is very important, and as a semi open space, with allowing user to view to other floor level as a attraction to them.

Studio 3: Journey of the 5 Senses, Project 1b

Project 1b: Journey of 5 senses "Poetic Architecture"

A concentric walkway based on a song call "Ring a Ring O' Roses" a nursery rhyme. With enhanced user experiences, continuous spinning circulation around the center, exploring the meaning behind everything while dizziness if to be found. Resist, doubt and trust, Death, hope and heal, different experiences with different path, up or down, a double experiences for the user just like the rhyme.





A linear building, based on a song called "Imagine" by John Lennpn. Imagine it self as the title of the song and for the theme of our walkway's poetic spatial. A journey from difficulty to success, from dark to light, from war to peace. One must first contribute then only be rewarded, without action taken to change, everything will still be remain, that's the main poetic we wanted to deliver to the user, although it seem so hard, but actually it is not, use our imagination to create a better world.
Located at the middle of the city, near the shore, at the edge, a place for people to relax from a stressful world. Peacefulness will be brought to this place.





A poetic space has directly relation with human emotion, affecting each other different, since different person has different though, vision and emotion. Different people will have different experiences, but what really matter is that the message that need to deliver to the user, the function still the most important aspect to a building, poetic space is more like a additional for the building for better aesthetic.

Building Construction 2: Project 2: Understanding Forces in Building Construction

Savill Building

A significant grid shell building, we had chosen this building as for our case study about grid shell construction. 

The roof of this Savill Building itself is made up of grid structure with minimum support from the inclined column. The grid shell is carefully shaped with equally high at highest point and lowest point, so that the forces and loads are being transfer an distribute evenly throughout the whole grid structure to the column, make no point with extra loads or forces. It is constantly at compression and tension stresses because of it positive and negative curvature of the structure. 

The strength is all coming from the carefully shaped structure and the materials itself. Wooden, with high strength accept both tension and compression stresses matches perfectly with the design. The wall has nothing to do with the support of the roof structure although they are attached, it just sit on it and seal to give weather resistant.  







Grid shell can be very strong and self sustain if design with extra care, that's the hardest part of the structure. In order to achieve it, precision and accuracy are very important. But it really worth because grid shell can consider as strong structure with can compare with concrete built structure.

Building Construction 2: Project 1: Skeletal Construction (Temporary Bus Shelter)

Design and construct a temporary bus shelter as the aim of this project. The temporary bus shelter bus be able to resist weather, lateral forces, and unpredictable loads such as passenger. The bus shelter can be in any form or shape but mainly support are from the skeletal structure itself, roof or wall may be added as non load bearing.

As a group, we design a rectangular temporary bus stop with minimum design, this is because a rectangle structure is most stable compare with other shape with structural support. Minimum design due to minimum obstruction in the interior space or exterior wall. We had experience with many different shape, come out with a huge unusable or waste space with is so unsustainable. The roof itself is a pitch roof. In our country with the data of rain pour, a pitch roof is most suitable because it drain water at a very efficiency rate and does not accumulate water, with slightly extended roof also provide a sheltering for rain and sun. 

The material itself we choose is bamboo as the structure frame. Bamboo is recyclable and with strong with can withstand compression and lateral forces. The bamboo we estimate with a diameter of about 150mm, which give enough strength. For the roof, nina palm leaves as the roof material with the properties of very light weight, water proof, available locally, and sustainable and recyclable. For the foundation of the structure, it is elevated up and the footing is embedded into concrete foundation to resist and lateral forces.

The skeletal structure stability is very important for any building because it is the skeletal that hold up the entire building. If the skeletal itself is not durable enough or cannot resist any external force, then it fail to be a structure. A good skeletal structure is a carefully design structure which can withstand any weather condition and hold up any loads and provide safety for the user. Base on this assignment, A strong skeletal structure now a days is much much important because the unpredictable climate change due to the global effect, anything can or could happen so structure must be prepare to withstand any of this natural disaster.
