Architecture and Culture History 2, Project 2

As a group, we are to choose a building, and documenting the findings of the analysis, including the introduction of the building, site context analysis, layout of building, architectural style, building construction, strucutal and material, and elements. With all these information, compile and make a report out of it.

Menara MBPJ, located at Petaling Jaya, is a landmark and a symbol of modernism in Petaling Jaya. This building has a very interesting shape and its archictecture style is very unique from other. From facade to structure, everything is planned carefully, even the site context, the plaza and parking lot have it own meaning and useage to be placed at that particular space. With all the analysis we have, this is a masterpiece even until now. I have learn a lot from this tower, about the planning, use of architecture style and spacing which will help me out in my future.

Architecture and Culture History 2, Project 1

Research Time-line Analysis

This project is all about research analysis, which invovles documenting, analyzing, producing and presenting a chronological interpretation of modern Malaysia architecturel history. We are to analyze and discuess about the relationship of the Modern Architecture of Malaysia with social, cultural, environmental and intellectual contect of Malaysia architecture post independence. With all the information, compile and create a presenting chronology.

The area we've been given is Subang, Petaling Jaya. Subang is one of the biggest constituencies in Selangor and is a diverse area comprising people various ravial, religious and social background. There are few number of school around this area including primary, secondary and college or university. Its also one of the main business and commercial industry area.

Throughout this project, there are a lot of information to absord, the chronology of Subang area, how it grow in term of architectural design and ecomonic way. The architectural style of all these building are come from world wide which open up my eye.

Environmental Sustainable Design Project

Green-Go Short Environmental Film

Environmental issues have become a great concern for mankind at present time as these issues are affecting and will affect earth and us badly. As such, there are quite a number of environmentalists or movement either government or non-governmental trying and fight the injustice human commit towards earth.

This project require us to produce a short films that reflects these concerns and to part of the change for a better world and be on the big screen with our creative thoughts. The films must content the environmet issue such as polutions, with the help of data, information and impact, to increase the awareness and convey this message to the public.

The issue that my team doing are about deforestation which connected to the used of paper. From our research, it shows that tons of trees are being cut down and majority are send to factory to produce paper. The data shows a very unhealth pattern of trees being cut down, which we estimate in near 10 years will cause a big issues to every living thing on earth, such as global warning, rise in carbon dioxide, and other natural disaster like earth quake or landslide.

Without this project, I think I would never think about all these issues and affect it bring to the earth and every living things. I finally understand that how important is it to start preserving or saving the earth from any direction or categories. As an architecture student, the importance of designing green and sustainable building are priority now. And also I hope that our video able to convey the awareness to everyone.

Studio 2, Project 2b: Retreat House

Deisng a retreat house for specific client, this is what we are doing in this project. The site will be the same as project 2a, we are to design retreat house, again base on the site context with the help of those analysis. The client give to me is "Romantic Botanist" specialize in breeding plants.

For me, I choose to build the retreat house our to the sea on the rock area because of my client nature, which is do not disturb the nature. Area are begin categorize and separate into different blocks and connecting by the circulation along the house. Garden will be placed alongside the structure and a working area will also be available for the client. I tend to enlongate the structure instead of having another floor, this is for the benefit to the garden. With all the blocks and garden placement, It is facing different direction and able to absorbe sunlight in different time, so if the structure is too high, it will defeat this purpose.

Presentation boards and model:

There are many opinion I recieve from other, but I knew that as a person, we cannot statisfy other as they have different view, opinion or perspective from there point of view, and it is different from mine too. So for me, what really matter is the journey and experience I can get from doing any of this project, I will keep on invade and discover what is the best design for me and others.

Studio 2, Project 2a: Introduction to Site Analysis & Observation Deck

First, we went to Cape Rachado, Port Dickson. As a huge group we conduct a series of site analysis. After the site analysis, in pair we are to design a observation deck. The function of the deck and location are up to us to decide and must be considerate to the site context.

Site Analysis Report:
Site A Analysis from Yung Kai

The deck we design is for bird watching and is located on the middle of the track. It is to build on a very steep area so that there are nothing blocking in front, giving a clear view. Besides that, our design is based on a bridge, continue out the sky reaching the birds. The structure look like a net holding up the deck which have the fuction of catching mist and condense it into water droplets also attract the bird to stand on it.

From this project 2a, I realize that having a site analysis done before strating to design is very useful and important, it give off every information that what we can or cannot do in that particular site. It help to push our design to the limit and make use of everything that is on the site context. About site context, it makes our design becoming more unique because we are designing based on it, which no others can use on other site.

Studio 2, Project 1: Famous People, Familiar Faces, Diagrammatic abstraction

We are introducte to all these famous architecture, and as a group, we are to study one of these famous architecture's master piece, analyse and make a presentation about it. The analysis is base on following, organization of form, organization of space, circulation and paths-space relationship, spatial hierarchies, context and elements. Through this project, we able to enhance our design and learn from these architect, the ability to analyse and diagram those elements.

My group are given Maisons Jaoul, by Le Cobusier, a modern architecture. In his architecture, he chiefly built with steel and reinforced concrete and worked with elemental geometric forms. Le Cobusier is famous for his modulor, which is the golden ration for scales of architectural proportion. Le Cobusier also include his five points of architecure in every master pieces of him, which are pilotis, free facade, open floor plan, horizontal windows and roof garden.

Building Construction 1, Project 2: Construction Detail and Specification

This project 2 is connected with our Design studio 2b final project. It is basically based on what we have designed in our Design Studio 2, a retreat house, and from there choose few elements of the house and explain the details as well as the construction. The aim of this project is to develop awareness and understanding strong interelation between design and construct, enhance our flexibility in choosing the material which suit the design most and structural theory in projects.

The aspect that I explaning are roof with ceiling, wall, slab and foundation. For me, its true that choosing the material does affect the design. With the precast concrete slab, I was forced to change the position of the foundation, but what amaze me was that after changing it, everything still workout find for me.

Studio Project 2b:

Building Constrcution 1, Project 1: Experiencing Construction

In a group of 8, we are to produce a report of construction base on the construction site we choose. Each person will handling one topic. The aim of this project is for us to experience construction, since we have to choose a few site to conduct site visitation before we start our report, this is a great experience for us to leanr about the principle and procedures of construcion process through real life project. Besides, we also able to learn the sequence and coordination of construction at site as well as the technology or methods being used on site.

There 2 site we chosen, first located at Setia Alam, Klang, its a three storey terrace house project, second is semi-detached factory located at Desa Cemerlang, Johor Bahru.

Since we all doing different parts of the project, but we still able to learn everything from each other. The communication skill is very important as in studying or working on site inorder to produce great work, thats what I've observed. Although for me, the work I done cannot be called good if compare with my groupmates, but I do appreciate that my groupmates did not look down at me but encourage me throughout the project.

Building Materials - Project 2 Materiality of Space

Materiality of Space : "An Experiential Exploration"
In a group of 5, we are to choose a site, it can be a housing area, shopping area, shop or anything and through site visit, we need to study and understand their materials used on site, and the effect of the specific material to the site. The site we chosen is Publika. Publika consist of a shopping mall, two shop lots, a small park and a plaza.
We are to create 3 group boards and 1 individual board. The group board including a introduction of the site, a materials list and a mood board.

Group Board and Mood Board

Individual part
For individual part, the site I choose is the corridor. The reason I choose this very command site is because I feel like studying more indepth of it, the materials used to make this command corridor look unique with fully funtionable, the visibility and circulation are very important on this site with the help of the materials used. Like different floor finishes to differentiate different area. I found that this is a very interesting part to do with.

Individual Bard

Building Materials - Project 1 Solid vs Void

Solid vs Void
In this project, we are to create a model which reflect the understanding of solid and void, light and shadow. The model can be made out of any materials but maximum 3 types, the material we used must be relate to the topic as well and form a strong bond with the model. A presentation board is required.

The shape I choose was cuboid because in my opinion it is the most efficiency and effective shape. My model will be a combination of cubiod to form a bigger cubiod frame. Inside the cubiod frame is void space, there I can use my creativity to make someting on it, for example, using stick-liked cuboid frame with sequence from small to big to create a visual effect of depth. Then, use different sizes of cubiod with different material and stacking it up to give a elevated kind of visual effect.
As for the material I used, are aluminium sheet because of it hardness, plastic sheet, and cardboard.

Design Communication - Project 3

This is a combination of Design Studio, we are to draw our own hideout, with one floor plan, two elevations and 1 section. This project is similar to project 2a, orthgraphic drawing, technique will be the same just the object changed, so we have our very own unique drawing.

Floor plans, and elevations

Section and interior axonometric

Design Communication - Project 2

Project 2a
Orthgraphic Drawing: Plan, Sections, Elevations.
We are to draw out a floor plan, 4 sections and 2 elevations of the huse given to us, which is The Farnsworth House. Line weights will be used on these drawings to show a much more clearer information.

Project 2b
Axonometric Projection
Two axonometric drawing, external and section (internal) axonometric, the object will be the same also, which is Farnsworth House.

Project 2c
Perspectives
We are to draw two perspectives, one exterior (two-point) perspective and one interior (one-point) perspective.

Design Communication - Project 1a and 1b

On-site Sketching and Tonal Values

On-site Sketching, visulisation and expression of space on our campus. Its a free-hand sketch and to demostrate the understanding of solid and void, openness, light and shadow, landscape and also scale and proportion.

Tonal Values, a free-hand sketching focusing on technique and tone in sketches.

Architecture Design Studio 1 - Project 1: Representing Me

First project of design studio, Representing Me. In this project, we are to create something that are able to represent or reflect who we are, simply representing ourselves, it can be anything, a mask to a tool.

As for me, I decide to create a spinning staircase which lead to infinite. The reason I make this is because of my curiosity and motivation to hardworking. The stairs are slowing becoming shrink and then expanded again, then there is another stairs connected from top to bottom to create a infinite feel circuit, this design comcept is based on paradox concept, which is infinite, to indicate the curiosity of mine and the problem that I'm facing will never ending.

Architecture Design Studio 1 - Project 2: Life Capsule

Life Capsule is a confined space which will house multi-functional furnitures which the user can use for several position and for activities for a day long. We are doing this life capsule in a group of 5, the cilent we choose are Edwin because of he has a strong personality. He is a businessman, so the life capsule we make must have a space for him to work on and have enough cabinate for filing or stuff, then a area for resting.

Interim Presentation
The design of the life capsule is implemented with some robotic design, which is polygonal. But the outlook is not that statisfied so we change a lot of it. And the final outcome is very satisfied since we need to apply furnitecture into our life capsule. We use the structure support as a furniter as well, for example, the fins that supporting the wall act as a table as well. Then the whole structure and ciling is support by 2 piller hidden inside the capsule so it won't fall off easily and provide a very refreshing space since most of the heat from sunlight are blocked out by the roof or ciling.

Presentation Boards and Model with 1:100 scale

Final Presentation
The design concept of our life capsule did not change that much, we just added in some more supporting wall or fins since the 1:1 actual model is kind of heavy compair with the mockup model.

Architecture Design Studio 1 - Project 3a: My Building, My Architecture

In a group of 5-8, we are to create a short video, 5-10 minutes, talk about the building we choosen, the building background or history, walk through the site and describe about the space and activites of that particular building. The building my group chosen was One Utama Shopping Mall.

Architecture Design Studio 1 - Project 3 Final Project: A Hide Out

The final project of design studion is about creating a hide out for our client. A hide out is a space where the user shade away from limelight and busy hectic life, a space specially design for the user which lead to comfort, relaxing and personal. The client I choose is Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft.

There are few aspect that I'm focusing on when designing the hideout, a space for his hobbies, resting area, make the space as big as possible to help reduce stress, a relaxing working space, functionality and the lightning and circulation. The concept of the hideout is innovative style. I combine the living room and working space, which is his office together without any parting to improve the space, this is called open space design concept, which make the area look bigger to help reduce stress. The badroom will be at second floor and also the garden area, a greenhouse since my client likes green plant very much.

In this project, I've learned how to use and design a space to its maximum potention with a lot of functionality and user friendly, which I think is the most important thing and the first to think of, the user experience. Give the user a better living condition and comfort.

Culture & History 1 - Project: Precedent Study and Analysis

Brief Introduction
Culture and History 1 is a chronological survey of the developments of Western architecture from the beginning of time to the period of Enlightenment, with consideration of the intellectual, aesthetic, technological, political and economic factors which have influenced the design of the buildings. These issues are explored with reference to major contemporary examples and the work and phiosophy of significant exponents.

Project: Precedent Study and Analysis
This project focus on investigating historical works to enrich architectural design and idea. Through the study of existing buildings, we are able to communicate and expand our own architectural vocabulary and develop design concepts.

This project consist of 3 part.

Part 1
Part 1 is a on-line group forum. In a group of 5, we are to study analysis of the given historical building, make an online forum discussion with analysis drawings. The building given to my group is San Vitale, Ravenna, Italy. We are to answer 1 question out of 5 individually and make a forum about the question. The question I answer was question 1.

i. Who was the architect or founder of the building?
ii. What was the concept or philosophy of the architect or founder that makes the building historically significant / meaningful?

Part 2
Part 2 is individual work, with the previous forum we have done, we are given whole new bunch of questions. Our task in this part is to create a sketch book and answer the question we choosen on it with mor ein-depth analysis information, drawing or sketches. Question 1 to 3 is compulsory for all student to answer as well as B-6, then again we choose 1 our of 5 question to answer.

1. How does the building reflect the spirit of the time and place for which it was built?
2. What are the initial ideas and the design concept?
3. How the initial ideas and the design concept affecting the architecture?
4. Spatial Organization analysis (i. Spatial planning & Landscape/Site Siting, ii. Building sequence and process, iii. Public vs. private, iv. Axis, v. Symmetry/Asymmetry & balance, vii. Repetitive to unique, viii. Additive and subtractive, ix. Hierarchy)

Part 3
Finaly part of this project is we are to creatively create a A2 presentation board base on PART 2's questions. The presentation board is strictly hand-draw and hand-written only.

My reflection toward this project or module is that I really learn lot of thing, especially different design style and idea in different period of time. With the help of te forum, we able to learn from each other or even share our knowledge or information with each other, thats a very new way of doing project for me, which makes things a lot easier and faster. Besides that, I'm able to enhance my architectural design and idea my implanting other design concept creatively into my deisng which help me out a lot in other subject like design studio.

The design box will be supported by presentation boards. During the process, students are required to draw all required illustration by hand and to creatively demonstrate their basic skills of architectural drawings, architectural rendering, architectural graphic and simple diagram explanations and sketches to clearly explain their concepts, ideas, and design. Students may use maximum 3 types of materials to produce the model of the displace box.

Project Brief

Toy Displace Box and Presentaion Boards

Reflection:
After having done this final project, I have learned that when doing any of these project, information of model is very important. This is because thats the key to create the toy displace box, everything must planned well with well explaination. Besides that, finishing the project on times and time management is very important, when there are more time, work can be done better.

Design, Assignment 2(a): Mood Cube

The aim of this assignment is for students to explore the transformation from 2D elements to 3D form. In this assignment, student will be playing with shapes, forms, colours, and materials and transforming it into a 3D art piece to suita a certain given word or phrase. Students are required to explore the given words and translate it into design elements and then to 3D artwork. The end products will be a 3D artwork that instantly reflects the given word. As for my group, we are given the word "Exaggerating".

EPC Assignment 2: Oral Presentation

Part 1
We are to choose a topic of interest between Traditional dwellings around the world or Religious buildings around the world to present during lecture. As for me, I chosen traditional dwellings around the world to present, and its traditional chinese dwellings, called chinese quadrangle. In this presentation, I will be presenting the historical background of the country, structure and layour of the dwelling, types of ornamentation used, type of materials used and other relevant information.

Part 2
In part 2 of our oral presentation, also we are to choose a topic between Mural Paintings within Klang Valley or Parks and Gardens within Klang Valley. This time, we are to apply effective public communication concept into the place we choose. I have chosen Parks and Gardens within Klang Valley and the park is location in PJs 10, called "Padang Cergas".

Reflection
Having completed the assignemnt, I have improve my oral presentation and speaking skills. Also with my confident level. During this assignment, it required the ability to research information and present in an effective presentation of our reserch. Besides that, I also have learned some of the effective public communication concept throughout this whole assignment. Also the histotical of other countries, learn more about other countries history or tradition, and the thing that I like the most is that I got to knw more about other countries architecture style, their dwellings, religious buildings, and also in our country, parks and gardens and the art of mural paintings.

EPC Assignment 1: Photo Blog

Tasks:
In a group of 5, first we are to choose a places of interest in Klang Valley, and then we are to produce a photo blog which consists of 25 to 30 photos of a particular setting or scene include a necessary write-up about 20 to 30 words per picture together with captions to further highlight of story on the blog. The photos should focus on people, food, activities, and cultural conservation on buildings.
For my group, we chosen Batu Caves as our location, it is a Hindu temple and shrine.

Link to our group's photo blog:
http://fnbe0414limjoeonn.wix.com/photoblog

My Selected Photo For Individual Part
This is a photo taken when they are having their weekly ceremony. People praying and the priest is blessing the people. These people actually come to this place weekly to held their ceremony, they believe that this will bring luck and health to their family. This photo show how holy is it, their believe show that there are peace in this world, that is how peaceful it is.

Those people are actually praying. They lay themselves on the ground, this is how they pray. Some people may stereotype them and might say why they do this, but this is their tradition, this is the way they pray and they do not care about other saying, they just believe in it.

This photo shows the people taking off their shoes before go in to the temple. They do this is because they believe that the temple is a holy place and shoes will dirty the place. Everyone do this action, even outsider also do so, because we respect each other and follow the rules, this is a very good manner or ethics to have.

These are the monuments on the temple or shrine. Those are actually the status of their God. Those status have their own meaning and symbol. When people saw it, they will automatically understand what the temple represent and belongs to. This is a very impresive carving that require skills and times to make this, interesting besign and architecture.

Temple or shrine inside a cave, connection with nature, they believe it is the only path they can connect with their God. This is the nature conservation, they preserve it and mataining the beauty of nature and created a harmony natural and built environment.

Reflection
In conclusion, I travel a lot and also learn a lot during this assignment. I also learn the beauty of our country with different races and believes. To finish this or any other assignemnt, as a part of group, communication and teamwork between group member is very important and it is the key to success. Without any of them, we couldnt finish this on time and with a very good result.

Assignment 3: Final Project and Group Presentation

In a group of 5, we will create a built environment design that reflects the social psychology topics. As for my team, we decided to create a restaurant with the theme of romantic.

Our design

Write up report

Our Presentation Video

My reflection towar this assignment is that this is a really challenging. This is because applying social psychology concept into the building or design is not that easy, it takes time and lot of brainstorming with my groupmate. But the outcome of it is quite satisfy and we manage to finish it on time.

Assignment 2: Comic Strip

Task:
Individual or group of 2, we are to produce a comic strip, the comic strip must relate a topic of social psychology. This is a short sequence of drawing in interrelated panels to display the narrative series of the intended topic. Me and my friend decided to draw a comic strip based on social psychology concept "Anchoring and Adjustment Heuristics".

This is a very interesting assignment to me, it help us to improve our creativity through create a comic strip, which I never done before, this is a very new experience to me. In the same times, I also  understand more about the specific social psychology concept.

Assignment 1:Individual Journal

First Individual Journal

In this journal, we need to observe and captual visible social behavior displayed in various social setting, then we need to prepare a write up to descript the social behaviour and apply some of the social psychology concept.

Second Individual Journal

We are daily exposure to printed and electronic advertisements that reflects elements of social psychology concepts such as persuasion, stereotyping and perjudice. In this second individual journal we are required to focus on identifying the mechanism of highlighted concepts and produce a write up essay as it is part and parcel of the current lifestyle.

My reflection on this 2 journal is that we get to know or learn more about social psychology concepts and got a chance to apply it on our daily life. This is actually a very good experience and is very useful.

Overall Reflection

For me, this subject is really fun, in the way our lecturer teaching and the things we learned during class, everything can be very useful to me, maybe in my future study or even when I'm working. I have learned different type of business, from a small business until free market, as long as it is making profit,, then it is a good business, most importantly, for organization which is not making any profit, it is not a business.

Next is about the assignment we done. For the first assignment, my presentation skills had improved and also my confident level. I learned about what takes to start a business. Choosing a right type of business is very important too, selling goods or providing, it is a very big different in between this two type of businesses. Besides, planning, analysing, brainstorming about market strategies, management and finance plan. It just feel like I'm really going to run this business since the business plan we did was in a very profession way, thanks to our lecture Mr.Joe by guiding us till the emd.

Charity drive, challenging but learned a lot, its more than what we learned in class. Planning a business is not easy, but running a business is even harded then it. Maintaining the business and keep on improving and changing our market strategies is the key for a business to success. I'm glad that my group made it till the end even though the outcome is not that satisfy because we did not hit the target, but I seill enjoy doing this charity dirve.

Finally, I'm glad that I have overcome all the problems and those assignments. A special thanks to all my friends who helped me a lot and also my lecturer, Mr.Joe. All the happy moment will be remembered and I did not regret anything.

Assignment 2: Charity Drive Event

In a group of 4, we are to run a charity drive and the money we earn during the cherity drive will 100% donate to a charity organization. After the charity drive, we have to submit a charity drive report with all the documents and details made by our group and the result of this charity drive.
We can either sell products, or provide services to earn money. For my team, we decide to sell food, and the charity organization we choose is Foo Guang Shan, it is a Chinese Buddhist organization which currently(Jan 2015) helping the flood victims in Kuala Krai, Kelantan.

Product and Packaging Video

Promotion Video

Reflection Video

My thought towards this assignment is that this is a very good experience for me to actually learn how to run or organize a business. Other than that, problems solving skill is very important in starting or running any kind of business even it is just a charity drive, it can be critical and affect the profit if we do not solve the problems.

Non Graded Work 3
